William Penfold on the Lord Melville was from Thakeham, east of Petworth, but an emigrant letter describes him as "of Easebourne workhouse" at Midhurst. He left England with many concerns of his own. William Tyler, Egremont's agent, had pursued him for a sizeable debt just as the Lord Melville was about to sail, and Chippes fussed about security for the considerable sums which of neccessity were advanced for Penfold's use as the emigrants travelled inland. Penfold had brought along his pregnant wife who gave birth during the voyage. When a whole tier of berths along one side of the Lord Melville collapsed during a storm, Penfold must have been distracted in dealing with the resulting confusion among the emigrants, all of whom were fortunate in escaping any serious injury.
